Broker Verification Tool

Check if a freight broker is legitimate before hauling their load

This tool connects to the FMCSA SAFER database to verify broker authority and insurance status.

Broker Verification Checklist

Before hauling any load, verify these items to protect yourself from scams:

1

Verify MC Authority

Check FMCSA SAFER database (safer.fmcsa.dot.gov) to confirm active authority

2

Check Insurance Status

Ensure cargo insurance and bond are current and sufficient

3

Confirm Authority Age

Brokers under 6 months old are higher risk (many scams use new MC numbers)

4

Verify Contact Information

Legitimate brokers have physical addresses, business phones, and established online presence

5

Google the Company

Search for reviews, complaints, and warnings on TruckersReport, Reddit, and Google

6

Check Credit/Payment History

Use DAT credit scores or factoring company broker directories to verify payment reliability

🚩 Common Broker Scam Red Flags

New MC Number (Under 6 Months)

Many scammers register new MC numbers, post fake loads, collect PODs, then disappear without paying.

Unusual Payment Terms

"Pay after 60 days" or "pay via wire transfer only" are red flags. Legitimate brokers pay in 30 days.

No Physical Address or Generic Email

Scammers use Gmail/Yahoo addresses and PO boxes. Legitimate brokers have business addresses.

Pressure to Book Immediately

"Book now or lose the load" is a scammer tactic. Legitimate brokers allow time to verify.

Rate Con Sent from Personal Email

Rate confirmations should come from company email addresses, not personal accounts.

Request for Upfront Fees

No legitimate broker asks carriers to pay fees upfront. This is always a scam.

Inconsistent MC Number

If the MC number on paperwork doesn't match the SAFER database, it's fraud.
