Form the business
LLC filed in your state, EIN from the IRS, operating agreement. This has to exist before the authority application, because the authority is issued to the company — not to you.

File for the authority
MC number and USDOT number through the FMCSA, plus the BOC-3 process agent filing. Then the mandatory 21-day public protest period, which nobody can shorten.

The four things that cost new carriers money
The insurance number nobody warned you about
Most new authorities budget for the filing fees and get blindsided by year-one insurance. If your plan assumes $6K, the real number is closer to $20K–$34K. Know it before you file, not after.
The "100 carrier packets" problem
The day your MC goes active, your phone and inbox fill up with people selling you dispatch, factoring, insurance and ELDs. Almost all of it is scraped from the public FMCSA list. You do not have to answer any of it.
A lapsed insurance filing freezes your MC
Miss a premium and the insurer notifies FMCSA — your authority goes inactive and every broker sees it that same day. Getting it reinstated takes far longer than the lapse did.
The new-entrant safety audit

How long does it take to get trucking authority?+
Typically 4-6 weeks. The FMCSA requires a mandatory 21-day public protest period after your application is filed, and no service can shorten it. The rest of the time is company formation, the BOC-3 filing, and getting your insurance filed with the FMCSA.
How much does it cost to get your own authority?+

Do I need an LLC to get an MC number?+
You can technically operate as a sole proprietor, but the authority is issued to a legal entity, and most carriers form an LLC first for liability protection and because brokers and factoring companies prefer it. We form the LLC and file the authority together so the sequence is right.
What happens after my authority is active?+
Compliance starts immediately — quarterly IFTA, a drug and alcohol testing consortium, CSA monitoring, and a new-entrant safety audit within your first 12 months.
