Step Deck

A step deck (also called a drop deck) is a flatbed trailer with a lower rear deck that provides extra vertical clearance for hauling taller freight while staying within legal height limits.

What Is Step Deck?

A step deck trailer (also known as a drop deck) has two deck levels: a higher front section that sits over the tractor's rear wheels and a lower rear section that "drops" about 18-24 inches. This design allows the trailer to haul taller freight while keeping the total load height under the standard 13'6" legal maximum. The lower deck typically offers about 10 feet of vertical clearance versus 8.5 feet on a standard flatbed.

Step deck trailers are used for freight that is too tall for a standard flatbed but does not require a lowboy. Common step deck loads include tall machinery, industrial equipment, large vehicles, agricultural equipment, generators, and prefabricated structures. Total weight capacity is similar to a standard flatbed (approximately 43,000-48,000 pounds), but the distribution across the two deck levels requires careful load planning.

Step deck rates are premium — typically matching or exceeding standard flatbed rates at $3.25/mile or higher. The extra capability to handle taller freight opens up loads that fewer carriers can service, reducing competition and supporting higher rates. Many step deck carriers also accept standard flatbed loads when step deck freight is unavailable, giving them maximum flexibility.

⚠️

Why It Matters

Step deck capability opens up a segment of freight that standard flatbed carriers cannot haul, reducing competition and commanding premium rates. The versatility to also take standard flatbed loads means you rarely face freight shortages.

Real-World Example

Rachel hauls step deck in the Midwest. Her FF Dispatch dispatcher books a load of industrial generators from Detroit to Kansas City. The units are 9'8" tall — too tall for a standard flatbed (8'6" max clearance) but perfect for her step deck (10' clearance). Rate: $3.40/mile for 700 miles = $2,380. A standard flatbed could not take this load at all. Rachel earns premium rates because her equipment opens doors that fewer carriers can walk through.

How FF Dispatch Handles This

FF Dispatch books step deck loads at $3.25/mile and up. We also mix in standard flatbed loads when step deck freight is lighter, ensuring you always have revenue miles. Our dispatcher network includes brokers who specialize in over-height freight.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the height advantage of a step deck?+
The lower rear deck provides about 10 feet of vertical clearance versus 8.5 feet on a standard flatbed. This allows hauling freight up to about 10 feet tall while staying under the 13'6" legal height limit.
Can a step deck haul standard flatbed loads?+
Yes. Step deck trailers can haul any load a standard flatbed can, plus taller freight. This versatility makes step deck one of the most flexible equipment types.
How much does a step deck trailer cost?+
New step deck trailers typically cost $45,000-$70,000, slightly more than a standard flatbed ($35,000-$55,000). The investment is quickly recovered through access to premium-rate over-height loads.
