Lumper Fee

A lumper fee is a charge for third-party labor used to load or unload freight at a warehouse or distribution center, separate from the carrier's transportation rate.

What Is Lumper Fee?

A lumper fee is the cost of hiring third-party workers (lumpers) to physically load or unload your trailer at a shipper or receiver facility. Many large warehouses and distribution centers — especially in the grocery and retail industries — require lumper services and do not allow the driver to handle the freight. The lumper fee is typically $50-$400 per load depending on the commodity, number of pallets, and facility.

Lumper fees are supposed to be reimbursed by the broker or shipper, but this must be agreed upon in advance and documented on the rate confirmation. Many carriers have been burned by paying lumper fees out of pocket and then struggling to get reimbursed. Always confirm who is responsible for lumper fees before accepting a load. If the rate confirmation says "lumper reimbursable," make sure to get a receipt from the lumper service — no receipt means no reimbursement.

Some facilities offer "driver assist" as an alternative to lumpers, where the driver helps unload (usually for a reduced fee or free). However, driver unloading adds time, physical strain, and liability risk. Most experienced owner-operators prefer paying the lumper fee and using that time to rest or complete paperwork.

⚠️

Why It Matters

Unexpected lumper fees of $100-$400 can turn a profitable load into a break-even trip. If lumper fees are not pre-negotiated and documented, you may get stuck paying out of pocket with no reimbursement. Always know the lumper situation before accepting a load.

Real-World Example

Nina delivers a dry van load of beverages to a grocery distribution center in Atlanta. The facility requires lumper services at $275. Nina pays the lumper with a ComCheck (prepaid by the broker) and gets a receipt. Because her FF Dispatch dispatcher confirmed lumper reimbursement in the rate confirmation, the $275 is added to her load payment. A driver who did not confirm this in advance would be out $275.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who pays the lumper fee?+
Typically the broker or shipper, but this must be confirmed in writing on the rate confirmation. Never assume lumper fees are covered — always verify before accepting the load.

At most large distribution centers, no. They require lumper services for insurance and liability reasons. Refusing could result in being turned away and losing the load.
How do I get reimbursed for lumper fees?+
Keep the lumper receipt and submit it with your POD and invoice. Many brokers issue ComChecks or prepaid cards for lumper fees. If you pay out of pocket, the receipt is essential for reimbursement.
